THE BEACON

June 2018

horizontal line

Wow, it is hard to believe that the last month of our 2017-2018 school year is upon us.  Time has certainly flown by!

I want to thank our Beacon Hill school community - parents, students, and staff for all your support in my first year as Principal of this amazing school.

To our students who are leaving us this year, we wish you all the best as you continue your journey in learning.

I wish everyone a wonderful summer filled with sunshine and memories.

A huge thank you to our staff for providing an incredible number of after school activities this year - from archery, robotics, drama, knitting, running, snowshoeing,  basketball, badminton, and the list goes on!

Many of our guest speakers and field trips have been possible this year because of the tremendous support of our school council and parents plus-  thank you!

A special year end edition of The Beacon will be published during the last week of school.

Parents are asked to register their children for the upcoming school year.  You can go to www.fmpsdschools.ca and click on  Register Here.  You will need to register using your Parent Portal information.  If you do not have this information, please give our office a call and we will provide your login information for you.  You can always drop by our office to pick up registration forms if you don’t wish to register online.

Staffing Update

Please join me in welcoming  Mrs. Jen Saxton as our new head secretary of Beacon Hill School.  An arrangement has been made for Mrs Saxton to work at our school in the mornings until a replacement for her position at District Office has been filled.  Mrs. Puga accepted a position with Fort McMurray Public School District finance department, and although it was sad to see her go, we wish her all the best in her new position with the district.

Additional staffing announcements will be made as teachers and classes are determined for the 2018-2019 school year.

Construction Zone at our School

Over the next month,  roofing work for our school gym will commence.  Student safety will be focus #1, and areas will be fenced to ensure everyone is safe.

Aboriginal Week

Aboriginal awareness week will take place from June 18 - June 22nd at Beacon Hill Public School.

Among many activities planned, students will be participating in making FNMI themed arts and crafts. They will be speaking and interacting with Elders from the community.

They will also be increasing their knowledge of First Nations in Canada during this week.

Fine Arts Extravaganza and Multicultural Night

We are pleased to be hosting the 1st Annual Beacon Hill School Multicultural Night, which will be held in conjunction with our annual Fine Arts Extravaganza.

This is an opportunity to celebrate all the unique cultures that make up our fabulous community along with our student's artwork.

This will all take place on Thursday, June 21st from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

Apart from showcasing our wonderful student talent, another highlight of the evening will be a tasting of foods from all different cultures.  One of our EAs has offered to make a traditional Greek dish, our Custodian, Mrs. Saballas is making her world famous spring rolls, while Mrs. Saunders and Ms. McDonald promise some yummy Newfoundland toutons.

We are inviting any other parents or community members to bring their own cultural dishes so that we can experience a variety of tasty morsels.

If you would be willing to provide food (or drink!) for our event, please email Mrs. Saunders at krista.saunders@fmpsd.ab.ca and let her know what you would be making.

We will need the name of the dish, origin, and list of ingredients.

We are also looking for students who know a dance or performance from their culture. If your child would like to perform the night of please let us know.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from you by Friday, June 8th, so we have enough time to complete a delicious menu!  Please email  Ms McDonald at alisha.mcdonald@fmpsd.ab.ca
